Almost 45 years I go I was born in Kansas City Missouri. We moved about 3 1/2 hours away to Southwest Missouri when I was in the 1st grade but I still have great memories of KC. There is so much to see and do that it’s really a great place for anyone to visit.
Having family still living in the area brings us back to Kansas City from time to time. Regardless of the reason for road tripping to KC there are some absolute must-do’s every time we hit the road.
Driving up Interstate 49 my car almost automatically turns onto the off ramp to the little town of Rich Hill. With a whopping population of around 1400 people it is home to one of my all time favorite restaurants.
Now calling Swopes a restaurant might be a slight exaggeration. If any of you are fans of the Food Network show Diners, Drive-In’s & Dives this place would be right your alley. I’m sure that if it wasn’t for all of the cars in the parking lot people would just drive right on by and completely miss out on this culinary treasure.
On the Food Network show often the restaurant will have some sort of really unique menu item that separates them from the rest. However what makes Swopes special isn’t anything unusual at all. They simply make everyday diner food, but man is it great!
My family has been enjoying eating at Swopes for years. As a matter of fact I’ve been know to drive over 2 hours to Rich Hill just to eat there. The burgers and shakes are great but for me it’s all about the Suzie Q’s.
I’ve heard rumors that some people will actually share this mammoth helping. Not me! I eat every crispy, greasy bite! I’m no quitter!
After devouring my food I will top it off with a vanilla milkshake and be on my happy way.
Our other dining must when visiting Kansas City is very near and dear to my heart. It’s about classic comfort foods. It’s about homemade goodness. It’s about family.
With restaurants in Liberty, Independence and Riverside there is always a Corner Cafe nearby when visiting Kansas City. I’ve always loved anything I’ve eaten there but my favorite is definitely breakfast. And since they serve it all day it’s always an option!
Did I mention they also have a bakery? The pies are legendary but our favorites are the cinnamon rolls and sticky buns. The hubby adores the cinnamon rolls all warm and gooey and yummy. Myself, it’s all about the sticky buns. But either way you can’t go wrong.
I said that the Corner Cafe also reminds me of family. One reason for that is the homey atmosphere and memories of eating there with family and friends. The main reason I will always think of family, however, is because my uncle and his family actually own and operate these restaurants.
But I promise I am not giving a biased opinion, it really is that good! But don’t take my word for it, the proof is in the always bustling business that still takes the time to make sure each customer leaves satisfied.
With all of the great eating establishments that Kansas City has to offer I will always put these two on my must visit list. In part because the food is amazing, but it’s more than that. It’s the traditions and memories that tie us together as family that are what it’s really all about.
So you can bet that the next KC road trip we take will include visits to Swopes and the Corner Cafe as the hubby and I keep on collecting memories as we go.
